Guwahati, August 28, 2014: The Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has issued notice to the Assam Chief Secretary asking for an effective inquiry into the allegations of inaction by the State government and police in recovering the body of Priya Basumatary, who was recently killed by NDFB(S) militants in Chirang district.

Considering a complaint petition lodged by Dr Kamala Kalita, general secretary of the Asom Gana Parishad, on August 25, 2014, a division bench of the Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) comprising Dr Justice AH Saikia, chairperson, and Tarun Phookan, member, said that the inquiry must be conducted by a high-level committee and the report should be submitted within 30 days of receiving the notice. The AHRC suo moto case No.1127/27/14-15 has been registered in this regard.

Dr Kalita, in his complaint, requested the Commission to probe the allegations of failure on the part of the Government of Assam in general, and the SP of Chirang district in particular, in maintaining law and order, as also in protecting the lives of the people of the State.
