Imphal, August 28, 2014: With the nationwide launching of the Jana Dhan Yojana (JDY) aiming at providing every household with bank accounts by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi and simultaneous launching in all states, Chief Minister Okram Ibobi today inaugurated the scheme in Manipur at a function at Hotel Classic here.

In the launching function organized by State Bank of India's Regional Business Office in Manipur, Ibobi, who graced as chief guest, expressed confidence that every individual irrespective of his or her status will get banking facilities with the opening of bank accounts and provision of debit cards.

Under the new scheme, every individual will get an accident insurance to the tune of Rs.1 lakh each, he added.

Through the new bank accounts, citizens will acquire facilities for direct benefit transfer for various government schemes, said the Chief Minister while applauding the Pradhan Mantri Jana Dhan Yojana taken up by the Central Government.

Adhaar card linked account holders may also be given an additional sum of Rs.5000, if they operate their accounts properly for six months continuously, he informed the gathering, while mentioning that mega camps are held in all 9 districts to ensure everyone in the State opens its bank account under the scheme.

Informing that Manipur has a total of 5,91,107 households according to 2011 census, Chief Minister O.Ibobi said all families in the State will be benefited from the new scheme.

Admitting lack of banking facilities particularly in remote areas, the Chief Minister assured the gathering that integrated complexes having administrative office, police out post, banks, etc. would be established under the Tribal Areas Inclusive Growth Project in 27 block headquarters where banking facilities are not available.

At present the State has only 154 bank branches and 199 ATM booths, whereas the total population of Manipur is 27.22 lakhs, the Chief Minister said, while appealing to the people to extend cooperation in opening more bank branches in the State.

Among others, state Chief Secretary PC Lawmkunga, General Manager of SBI Corporate Centre PK Verma and Principal Secretary (Finance) Varun Mitra attended the state level launch of the Pradhan Mantri Jana Dhan Yojana.

During the programme, pass books were distributed to individuals who already opened their bank accounts under the scheme.

In connection with the programme, SBI also presented one computer set each to the Lord Star Public school at Laipham khunou and National Children School at Khongman.

As part of the simultaneous nationwide launch of the scheme, the Imphal East District Level Banker Committee of United bank of India also organized a district level mega camp at Panchayat Bhavan at Porompat today.

Speaking as chief guest at the function, Th.Lokeshore, Speaker Manipur Legislative Assembly said, 'When people understand the importance of banks, the state will progress' .

Imphal East Zilla Parishad Adhayksa K.Tombi presided over the function, while DC Imphal east M.Joy and I.Pradipkumar, General Manager of UTI Link Office Imphal attended as guests of honour.

The launching ceremony of Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana for Chandel district was held at DRDA Hall, DC office Complex with Deputy Commissioner of Chandel Robert Singh Kshetrimayum, IAS, as Chief Guest today.

Organised by SBI Chandel Branch, Principal of United College Lambung BD Thumdal and CNPO President Ws Kanral Anal were also present on the occasion as Guest of Honour and Functional President respectively.

Chandel SDO Siva Killu Naidu, IAS, and other district level officers also attended the function during which zero balance passbooks under Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana which were issued by SBI Chandel Branch and UCO Bank Chandel were distributed by the dignitaries among the people.
