Imphal, August 28, 2014: Contrarily to the premature reports that were doing to round earlier, Governor of Manipur Vinod Kumar Duggal formally submitted his resignation paper to President Pranab Mukherjee this evening.

Duggal is one of the Governors appointed by the previous Congress-led UPA Government who have come under pressure from the newly installed BJP-led NDA Government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for quitting in what as been described by political analysts as 'political revenge or vendetta' .

Sources from Delhi said the President has not accepted the resignation of VK Duggal till lat evening today.

The acceptance will not be granted until the President submitted the resignation letter to Prime Minister Office (PMO) for replacement by another Governor or the post is filled by a substitute as temporary arrangement.

Interestingly, the rumours about the resignation of Duggal from the post of Governor of Manipur and subsequent succumbing to the pressure of putting in his resignation has come just a couple of days after the President of India had announced that Duggal would continue to hold the additional charge of the Governor of Mizoram following the resignation of K Sankaranarayannan who quit in protest against his transfer from Maharashtra to Mizoram.

Duggal was appointed as the Governor of Manipur on December 23, 2013.This was his fifth assignment after he retired as a Home Secretary in March 2007.Soon after his retirement, he was appointed as a member of the Commission on Centre State Relations where he served for three years.

Meanwhile sources said that in case the President accepts the resignation of Duggal, the State Government led by Chief Minister O Ibobi will be giving a farewell to the Governor who is expected to reach here tomorrow at around 3.30 pm.

Then, Duggal would leave Imphal along with his wife, who is still in the city, either on August 30 or August 31.

Governor of Nagaland, PB Acharya, who left Delhi for Kohima today, will take charge as the new Governor of Manipur.

He will resign from the post of Nagaland Governor before he takes charge as the Governor of the State, sources added.

It may be mentioned that just after NDA Government comes to power in the centre, there have been instances where Governors of several States who were appointed during the tenure of UPA nudged to resign from the gubernatorial post while some removed.

Some of the Governors who have earlier resigned or removed from the post included Bhakkom B Purushothaman, Governor of Mizoram; Ashwini Kumar, Governor of Nagaland; BV Wachu, Governor of Goa; MK Narayan, Governor of West Bengal; BL Joshi, Governor of Uttar Pradesh;Sekhar Dao, Governor of Chattisgarh and Sheila Dikshit, Governor of Kerala.
