Imphal, August 30 2014 : Deeply concern over the plights of flash flood victims and their families in the country particularly in the north east India, the MODIfied Northeast India, which is an initiative to support Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urged the Central Government to take swift action to rehabilitate the flood victims and provide necessary ex-gratia to the family of unfortunate victims.

In a statement, MODIfied NE India said that incessant rains in the Northeastern states have hit several areas of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya and Manipur.

'Recent floods and landslides have caused deaths of more than 20 people and injury to over 100 persons.

Landslides in National Highways along Imphal Jiribam Road and Imphal Dimapur Roads have caused man made price rise of essential commodities', the statement asserted.

In East Garo hills of Meghalaya, 2 children have been killed, injuring scores and rendering homeless to more than 100 of villagers, it pointed out.

Due to incessant rains, several major towns of East Siang Districts in Arunachal- Namsai, Pasighat and Mebo have been cut off from rest of the State Headquarters, while landslides buried schools and houses, killing children and injuring more than 20 peoples, MODIfied NE India mentioned.

In Assam alone, at least 10 people were killed, more than 1.2 million people were affected and 16 districts, including Lakhimpur, Dhemaji etc marooned due to flood waters, it said while assessing the damage caused.

Alleging that state Governments have siphoned off crores of rupees meant for the prevention of floods and landslides, the statement cited more than Rs 1000 crores were sanctioned in Assam alone, but not much work were taken up.

In Manipur also, the state government has not utilized funds properly in respect of flood control and rehabilitation, the statement lamented.
