Diphu, September 2, 2014: The Commissioner of the Higher Education Department, Government of Assam, Himanshu Sekhar Das has placed two lady professors of the Diphu Government College under suspension with effect from August 1.

It may be mentioned here that Mashurina Hussain, head of the Department of English, and Lariem Taropi of the Philosophy Department, were arrested by the Diphu Police on August 25 under multiple sections of the IPC in connection with the assault on Dr Nirab Sharma, principal of the Diphu Government College, at his office chamber on August 13. Both have been in judicial remand since then.

The Commissioner of the Higher Education Department has also served show-cause notices to several teachers of the college against whom an FIR was filed by the college authorities after the incident of assault.

“The action has been taken as per the law and the Department will also initiate action against some 17 teachers of the college who are not attending to their duties. Show-cause notices are being issued and salaries and other allowances will not be paid to those teachers of the college who are absent from their duties. An order has been issued to the acting principal not to sanction any leave to the teachers. Any further action in this connection will be taken according to government regulations,” Babulal Sarma, Deputy Secretary of the Education Department, Government of Assam, said over the phone.

Meanwhile, the current state of affairs of the Diphu Government College has not improved as the boycott of classes by students continues. Paramilitary personnel are guarding the institution round the clock. Sanjib Kumar Sonowal, the principal in-charge of the college, has been making all efforts to restore normalcy in the institution, but there has not been any improvement.
