Itanagar, September 1, 2014: Three under-trial prisoners (UTPs), accused in crimes like murder and kidnapping for ransom, gave police the slip and escaped from judicial custody of Chowkham police out-post in Namsai district of Arunachal Pradesh.

The escapees have been identified as Sahil Tirchi, accused of committing murder, and Vidhan Chakma and Chitiso Chakma, both accused in kidnapping and extortion cases.

A police case, in this connection, has been registered with the Namsai Police Station and a search operation launched immediately, informed Thomas Pertin, OC of Chowkham POP.

He said, the incident occurred on Saturday around 6 pm when a Nepali man engaged by the private firm supplying cooked foods to UTPs was serving them food and potable water.

The ‘men in uniform’ guarding the lock-up had to open the iron grill to facilitate the food server to pass on the eatables and bucketful of water to the UTPs in the cell No. 2 of the lock-up and all of a sudden, all 14 UTPs of the cell came out in a bid to escape but the ‘major’ standing guard outside stopped them. However, three of the inmates managed to flee from the scene.
