Silchar, September 16, 2014: The Assam University, Silchar, a central university situated at Dorgakona near here, has proposed to confer honoris causa (an honorary academic degree) on Indian boxing legend MC Mary Kom during its 14th convocation to be held on November 15 this year.

A senior official of the university on Monday said on the basis of the academic council's recommendation, the AU executive council recently proposed the name of Mary Kom, along with some other eminent personalities of the county, to President Pranab Mukherjee, who is the visitor of Assam University.

The proposal is yet to get the nod from the office of the visitor as well as the Union ministry for human resource development, the official added.

Manipur-born Mary is a five-time world amateur boxing champion and the only woman boxer to have won a medal in each one of the six world championships. She also won a bronze medal in the London Olympics. Kom wrote an autobiography called 'Unbreakable' (2013).

"AU, the central institute for higher education, is eager to honour Kom by conferring a D Lit on her during the convocation. We hope she will be present on the occasion to receive the same if it's cleared by the MHRD", said the official.

Sources said MHRD minister Smriti Irani, among other dignitaries, will be present at the convocation.

Other recipients of the honour include President Pranab Mukherjee former Indian cricket captain Saurav Ganguly, acting legend Soumitra Chatterjee and internationally acclaimed theatre personality Ratan Thiyam.
