Guwahati, September 10, 2014: Condemning the State government’s move to withdrawn the circular regarding use of Assamese as official language in Barak Valley, the Asom Gana Parishad today asked it to refrain from indulging in politics over the issue.
AGP general secretary RN Kalita said that the Congress government has been indulging in a conspiracy against the culture and language of the State since assuming power.
He said that Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has no knowledge about the sacrifices made by martyrs of the State and added that the decision has been made with a view to garner votes during the upcoming by-elections to the Legislative Assembly.
The State government had on Tuesday withdrawn the circular ‘PLC 14/2011/39’ dated November 30, 2013, regarding use of Assamese as official language in Barak Valley immediately.
The government had said that the circular that created confusion in some circles was not actually meant for Barak Valley. It also issued a new circular ‘PLC14/2011/47’ yesterday stating that the official language of Barak Valley will continue to be used for all official works.
The AASU also called upon the State government not to try and gain political mileage from the issue.
