Jorhat, September 2, 2014: A male rhino was killed and its horn taken away by poachers in Kaziranga National Park today taking the toll to 22 so far this year, said a senior Forest Department official.

The one-horn Great Indian Rhinoceros was shot dead in the Chirakhowa forest camp area of Burapahar Range of the Park, according to KNP Divisional Forest Officer S K Seal Sarma.

The horn was sawed away by the poachers and seven AK-47 rifle along with four 303 rifle empty cartridges were recovered from the site, he said.

A search operation has been launched to nab the poachers, the DFO said. On August 28, two poachers were killed in an encounter with patrolling forest personnel in the World Heritage Site's Burapahar Range totaling 18 this year.
