New Delhi, September 12, 2014: Days after External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said that political discussion was on, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said that the Centre was yet to take a decision on the Land Boundary Agreement with Bangladesh.

The Union Home Minister, who was addressing a press conference, replying to questions admitted that Bangladesh has been pressing for ratification of the LBA. However, no final decision has been taken as yet, he added.

Sushma Swaraj had last week said that the Constitution Amendment Bill introduced in the Rajya Sabha is under consideration of the Parliamentary Standing Committee and political discussion were going on.

Singh, who was briefing newsmen on completion of 100 days in office, said that a comprehensive policy on the North East is being drafted. In the next 15-20 days, the policy would be given a final shape. Former officials and experts are being consulted, the Minister said.

The Minister announced the Centre has taken an “in principle” decision to create the National Register of Indian Citizens and issue National Identity Cards to all citizens. Proposals in this regard are under active considerations.

Replying to a question, Singh clarified that the authenticity of the CD purportedly distributed by Al Qaeda is yet to be established. The jehadi outfit has announced formation of a separate outfit for India and threatened to target Assam, Kashmir and Gujarat.

On his achievement during the last 100 days, Rajnath Singh said that the economic blockade called by United Naga Council in Manipur was called off last evening after about five-six days of agitation. Previously, such agitations would continue for months.

About border security, Singh said that much more was needed to be done. A comprehensive policy is ready, he said.

The infrastructure in the border areas and surveillance needs to be beefed up. He added that he planned to visit the Indo-Bangladesh border to assess the situation.
