Agartala, October 8, 2014: Fifteen hideouts of banned outfit National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) still exist in neighbouring Bangladesh, highly placed sources confirmed here on Wednesday.

Around six hideouts are adjacent to the Indo-Bangladesh border while others are far away from it and all the hideouts are concentrated in Chittagong Hill Tract (CHT), a traditional hotbed of secessionist movements.

While interacting with the media at police headquarters here recently, Tripura Inspector General (IG), TB Roy said latest intelligence reports indicated zero militant movement inside the State. “We are, however, aware of militant activities on the other side of the border”, he said.

Besides BSF manned border outposts, Tripura State Rifles (TSR) runs 32 outposts close to the border as supplementary to the BSF outposts. About 172 TSR camps are active inside the State, engaging in counter-insurgency operations, he said.

In the wake of a spurt in militant activities and three abduction cases along Indo-Bangla border in Gandacherra and Chawmanu areas of Dhalai district, District Magistrate of Dhalai, Milind Ramteke has asked the concerned SDMs not to allow jhumias to spend the night at their jhum huts to avoid abduction.

When contacted, the DM said, “Jhumias can go for harvesting in far-flung areas but they will have to return home before sunset. Permanent security posts have been put in place in each village to ensure safety of villagers. Providing security to each jhum hut is not possible at night considering the adverse geographical position”, he said.

Ramteke added the district administration would take all possible steps to fence the unfenced Indo-Bangla border in Gandacherra and Longtharai Valley subdivision after the festival season gets over.
