Shillong, October 10, 2014: The CSWO on Friday said it will demand a CBI inquiry into the construction of the Jorabat-Umiam Expressway which is coming up at a cost of around Rs.536 crore implemented by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI).

CSWO president Agnes Kharshiing alleged that the project, which was awarded to M/S ILFS-Ramky, is now being sub-contracted to other strange unknown companies like the NKC/CE and YFC Projects, which is a violation of procedures and rules.

According to Kharshiing, the haphazard construction has claimed many lives due to landslides and shoddy methods of earth cuttings besides causing inconvenience and delay to commuters.

“This has also caused destruction to environment and loss of land of the villagers,” she alleged, while adding that CSWO has received contradicting stories of the recent landslide incident at Umling.

She informed that police have stated that there were only four cars severely affected by the landslide – AS 01-AY-5991(Ford Fiesta white colour), NL 01-H-4948 (Hyundai i20 white colour), AS 01-AM-1771 (Hyundai Verna white colour) and AS 01-BG/9892 (Maruti Suzuki Ertiga red colour).

Police have registered only a UD case at Nongpoh but have not registered a criminal case for loss of life, Kharshiing said, while pointing out that the organisation had received information that a Sumo had also been affected in the landslide site, but police had failed to hold the vehicle.
