Haflong, September 10, 2014: The employees of the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council have not received their salaries for the last ten months. More than 2700 employees of the council have been agitating for their salaries since long in the form of sit-in demonstrations, submission of memoranda to several authorities but till today there has been no result.

The employees of the NCHAC since Monday have been staging a dharna in front of the NCHAC demanding immediate release of their salaries and are also undertaking cease work from today for an indefinite period.

Following non-receipt of their salaries, the condition of the employees has become so pathetic that for the survival of their families, they have withdrawn their life insurance and other savings. Some have brought back their wards from studying outside the district as they cannot meet the expenditure. Under the condition of anonymity, one agitating employee disclosed that he has sold his TV and other household goods to meet his needs.

Conscious citizens of the district opined that the plight of the council employees should not be ignored and an amicable solution should be found immediately before the situation spirals out of control.

Other civil bodies also appealed to the authorities to rethink seriously and to do the needful. Non-receipt of salaries before a festival like ‘Durga puja’, could result in a strong agitation in the future, other employees said.
