Karimganj, September 9, 2014: Villagers of Karkat under Sheoratal Gaon Panchayat situated along the Dholai-Mizoram border are facing threat of aggression from Hmar extremists of Mizoram.
Though there exists a battalion camp at Dhalakhal, but the Assam battalion has allegedly failed to protect the villagers of Karkat. Recently, Mhar People’s Convention Democratic (HPCD) extremists demanded Rs 4 lakh from two traders of the village. The villagers of Karkat disclosed that following threat by the Mizo extremists, a few villagers were compelled to sell their property and leave the village.
On August 26, NL Borbhuiya of the village after receiving threat from this extremist group lodged an FIR at the Dhalai Police Station. In the FIR he alleged that on August 24 a medicine dealer named Abdul Gafur, besides Atim Uddin, Ramizuddin and Nazrul Islam received a mobile call from 08575224140, asking them to pay Rs one lakh each to a Hmar extremist.
It may be recalled that Hmar extremists kidnapped Alim Uddin and Ramizuddin and detained them at Shaifai in Mizoram and tortured them brutually. After one hour of the incident, they released Alim Uddin and Ramiz after they promised to pay Rs one lakh each.
Later, Alim Uddin and Ramiz lodged complaints at the Bhairenglee Police Station of Mizoram, but Mizoram Police reportedly maintained a stoic silence in the matter, alleged Alim and Ramiz. The villagers of Karkat village have therefore demanded the Cachar district administration to gear up security measures in the area on a priority basis in the collective interest of the villagers.
